Success Stories: The Impact of Oakleaf’s Employment Support

Oakleaf’s five-year ‘Path to Success’ project, funded by The National Lottery, commenced in 2024. Led by our experienced employment advisors, it’s more than just an employment programme – it’s a lifeline. We are dedicated to empowering individuals facing mental health challenges to gain the skills, support, and confidence needed to manage their mental health and achieve their personal and professional goals. In partnership with Guildford Action, we provide a nurturing, pressure-free environment where hope is restored, and futures are rebuilt.

Our support is comprehensive and tailored to each client’s needs. We offer one-to-one support, career workshops, a welcoming weekly Job Club, accredited training through Digital College and GoSkills, and inspiring guest speakers from various industries. Each element is designed to help clients believe in themselves again and take meaningful steps forward.

Here are four heartfelt stories and testimonials from clients who have benefited from our employment support, showcasing the profound impact of our Employment Project.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Opportunity

One of our long-term clients faced significant employment challenges over two years. After joining our Job Club, they gained valuable IT and First Aid skills and connected with a supportive community. With encouragement, they volunteered with Oakleaf and soon secured a role at Surrey University. Their journey demonstrates the power of persistence and the importance of support in overcoming setbacks.

George’s Path to Employment Success

George’s journey with Oakleaf has been one of steady progress. Through volunteering and completing an IT course, he gained the confidence to secure a part-time Support Worker position in the care sector. Now, as he takes on a new role with additional training, George’s story highlights how belief in one’s abilities, alongside support, can lead to success.

Unlocking Potential Through Tailored Support

Another client’s journey with Oakleaf spans several years, during which they completed numerous IT courses and grew immensely in confidence. Their first paid role—a prestigious internship with The Open University—was a dream realised. With our help, they achieved an advanced Python certification and also aced an interview for a Civil Service statistical role. This story highlights how tailored support can unlock potential and open doors to endless possibilities.

Rachel’s Creative Recovery

Rachel has been a valued member of Oakleaf for several years, actively participating in activities and forming strong connections. Recently, she sought support from the Wednesday Job Club to transition into paid employment. We helped her identify suitable roles, leading to a volunteering opportunity at a coffee shop in Guildford. With our guidance, she applied, interviewed the same day, and was offered the position. She continued attending the Job Club and soon shared fantastic news—she had secured a paid part-time role at a local tea shop.

“Oakleaf Enterprise has been a lifeline for me during some of the most challenging times in my life. I’ve gained new skills, discovered new passions, and formed lifelong friendships. The welcoming, supportive community has given me a sense of belonging that I never had before.

‘A Year in Recovery’ is a collection of poetry I wrote throughout 2024—a pivotal year in my recovery. Writing has been my way of expressing emotions, celebrating progress, and finding clarity. Now, I hope my book can give something back to Oakleaf, just as Oakleaf has given to me.”

These stories are just a glimpse of the life-changing impact our ‘Path to Success’ project has on individuals. At Oakleaf, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life, and with the right support, confidence, and skills, they can achieve their dreams. We are deeply grateful to The National Lottery for making this possible and to every client who inspires us every day with their courage and determination.
