Steve’s Story

Steve has always struggled to ask for help. During the pandemic, he caught Covid, lost his job, and faced serious health issues, leading to a severe decline in his mental health. Seeking support, he found clinical help ineffective and felt unheard, hopeless, and without confidence.

Eventually, Steve was referred to Oakleaf and joined the Upholstery course. “Coming to Oakleaf has given me my self-respect back. It has saved my life.” He now looks forward to Tuesdays, where he can be creative, learn new skills, and regain confidence. “It is a time for learning but also laughter, friendship, and fun; time to forget about the difficult things.”

He is gradually rebuilding his confidence and feels proud of his progress: “Oakleaf has helped me beyond words. It has made me feel more human again.” Though worried about what comes next after his course, he finds reassurance in Oakleaf’s continued support. He knows that staying engaged in its programs will help keep him well and is grateful for the sense of purpose it provides.
